HOT SPOT - Phuket

Phuket pronounced "Poo-get", is Thailand's largest island and also its second smallest province. It is 48 km in length, 21 km at its widest, and is located in Southern Thailand, on the west-facing Andaman Sea coastline, suspended from the southern tip of Phang Nga Province by a pair of short but substantial road bridges.

Phuket Town is the administrative centre of Phuket Province, and the island's main population centre.

phuket nightlife

The name Phuket (of which the ph sound is an aspirated p) is apparently derived from the word bukit in Malay which means mountain or hill, as this is what the island appears like from a distance.

Before that its old name was Thalang, derived from the old Malay "Telong" which means "Cape". The northern district of the province, which was the location of the old capital, still uses this name.

Tourism

Phuket is one of Thailand's premier tourist destinations and (basic) English is very widely spoken, especially in the beach areas. That said, even a little Thai will draw smiles and can be useful in the less touristed areas of Phuket Town.

Shopping

Phuket offers the usual plethora of handicraft souvenirs, gems and jewellery shops. They also have their fair share of tailor shops and copied designer gear. Phuket City and Patong are the places to go to get a bargain - Don't forget to bargain for the best price.

Nightlife

Phuket has a busy nightlife, second only to Pattaya among Thailand's beach resorts. Patong Beach is by far the busiest, of the lot, but in addition to go-go bars there are also plenty of other bars, discos and clubs offering live music and cabaret shows.

Why not try the following:

  • VIP Bar in Soi Bangla, Patpong Beach
  • Soi Sea Dragon (a street of bars), Patpong Beach
  • The Flying Handbag (Gay Bar), Patpong Beach
  • My Way (Go Go Bar), Patpong Beach
