CULTURAL EVENTS

SONGKRAN FESTIVAL, 13-15 April 2009:

April is the month of the Thai New Year Festival known as Songkran, which will be celebrated with style in Bangkok and major tourist cities like Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya, Samut Prakan, Sukhothai, Phetchaburi and many more.

CANDLE FESTIVAL, throughout July 2009:

It will take place in Ubon Ratchathani province. Activities include international candle sculpture carving which involves 9 artisans from various countries. The sculpture would be designed under the concept of "The World of Candles". The exhibition is aimed to conserve and promote the art of Thai candle carving as well as promote tourism to the I-san region during the time of the Buddhist Lent Festival.

LOI KRATHONG in November:

Join one of Thailand's most popular cultural festivals, Krathong, or the 'Festival of Lights" which is always celebrated on a full-moon night. People all over the country use waterways to release traditional banana leaf floats called "Krathong" and make a wish for good luck and good fortune.

 

SPORTS EVENTS

1ST ASIAN MARTIAL ART GAMES 25 April - 3 May 2009:

The Olympic Council of Asia has selected Thailand to host the 1st Asian Martial Art Games 2009. This is an entirely new event that OCA will organise for the first time even though these martial arts have long been part of the sporting tradition; namely, Karatedo, Kickboxing, Muai, Wushu, Kung Fu, Pencak Silat, etc. amongst the 45 members of OCA.

THE 2009 KING'S CUP ELEPHANT POLO TOURNAMENT:

will take place on 23-29 March, in the grounds of the Anantara Resort Golden Triangle, Chiang Rai. To date the tournament has raised over US$200,000 for the National Elephant Institute, which provides medical care, sustenance, employment, and mahout training to Thailand's elephant population.

 

OTHER EVENTS

1ST WORLD COMEDY FILM FESTIVAL, 23-29 April 2009:

Thailand will be the first country in Asia to organize the World Comedy Film Festival. The film event will feature more than 50 comedy films with an international array of films from 20 countries. "Laughter's Beyond Frontier" will be the theme of the maiden comedy film festival. Siam Paragon Cineplex and SF World Cinema at Central World will be the venue for this event.

TTM 2009 and TTF 2009:

Thailand Travel Mart Plus Thailand Travel Mart Plus Amazing Gateway Mekong Subregion (TTM+2009) in conjunction with the Annual Thailand Tourism Festival (TTF 2009) 3-7 June, which is the country largest travel and showcase event that includes many activities to promote the preservation of Thai culture, traditions, and local lifestyle with stage performances and demonstrations of local art and craft through four regions, at the Challenger hall, Impact Muang Thong Thani Exhibition Centre in Bangkok.
